Improper discharge of septic tanks or sewage

Every third well in the Pannonian Croatia exceeds the maximum permitted concentration of nitrate in drinking water, making it undrinkable (source: Ecologica). The consequences of this are, in addition to contamination of drinking and surface water, soil fertility decline (loss of organic matter, erosion, contamination by pesticides, heavy metals, veterinary preparations, etc.), air pollution, which is often attributed to other sources (ammonia and greenhouse gases emission) and the loss of biodiversity (genetic, species diversity, habitat types) and quality of the landscape. One of the reasons for pollution is certainly the WASTEWATER. A huge problem encountered by almost all of the smaller cities in Slavonia is drainage, i.e. a partial or complete lack of the public sewage system for domestic wastewater. On the greater part of our counties septic tanks are in use, which, by its capacity, often do not satisfy needs, and often are ‘cleverly’ designed and made with a porous bottom, so that they do not have to be discharged often, or the citizens empty them wherever they can, even in wells.
